Chidiatapu, translated literally as "Bird Island," is a lush biological paradise located at the southernmost tip of South Andaman. Renowned for its breathtaking golden sunsets and dense mangrove forests, it serves as a peaceful sanctuary for nature lovers, bird watchers, and those seeking a quiet evening away from the city bustle of Port Blair.
The road to Chidiatapu passes through a forest reserve. It is highly recommended to leave Chidiatapu by 6:00 PM. Driving back in the dark can be tricky due to the narrow winding roads and lack of streetlights in the forest stretch. Also, please note that swimming is strictly prohibited here due to deep waters and crocodile sightings in the past.
True to its name, the area is home to numerous endemic and migratory birds. Early morning visitors can spot the Andaman Wood Pigeon, White-bellied Sea Eagles, and colorful parakeets. The beach itself is uniqueβscattered with massive, silver-bleached uprooted trees that have become iconic symbols of the 2004 tsunami's impact, providing a hauntingly beautiful foreground for sunset photos.
Don't forget to visit the Chidiatapu Biological Park located nearby, which houses the endemic fauna of the islands in a natural jungle setting.
Chidiatapu is best experienced with a reliable driver who knows the forest roads well. We can help you book an AC cab for your evening excursion.
