Flag Point stands as a towering symbol of India's freedom struggle. Located on a scenic hillock overlooking the sea in Port Blair, this is the exact spot where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose hoisted the Indian National Flag for the first time on Indian soil on December 30, 1943, declaring the islands free from British rule.
While today it is a beautiful park, in 1943, this act of defiance by Netaji marked the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as the first part of India to be liberated from colonial rule. The site was recently renovated to include a grand memorial plaque and an illuminated pathway that glows beautifully after sunset.
Flag Point has become a favorite evening destination for both locals and tourists. The wide, clean promenade allows for a peaceful walk with the wind in your hair and the sight of the massive tricolour fluttering proudly against the blue sky. It offers a perfect 180-degree view of the Ross Island (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) and the moving ships in the distance.
