Kalapathar Beach is where the emerald forest meets the turquoise sea in a dramatic display of colors. Located at the edge of Swaraj Dweep, this beach is named after the unique black rocks (Kala Pathar) that line its shore. It is the island's premier destination for those seeking a soulful sunrise and a quiet retreat from the bustling crowds of Radhanagar.
While the water looks inviting, swimming is generally not recommended at Kalapathar. The seabed is filled with sharp black rocks and dead corals that can cause injury. Additionally, the currents here can be unpredictable. Save your swimming for the sandy shores of Radhanagar Beach.
What makes Kalapathar visually stunning are the remains of massive trees uprooted during the 2004 tsunami, which now lie bleached and silvered by the sun along the shore. Combined with the dark volcanic-style rocks and the brilliant blue water, it creates a "painterly" landscape. It is the best spot on the island to hang a hammock between two trees and spend hours reading or reflecting.
Don't leave without trying the local Fresh Coconut Water and the famous Fruit Salads sold by local vendors right at the beach entrance.
