Explore the rare Mud Volcano in Baratang, one of the only active mud volcanoes in India.

Baratang Island is home to a rare geological marvel: the Mud Volcano. Unlike traditional volcanoes that spew molten lava, this unique formation erupts with a bubbling mixture of mud, water, and gases. It is recognized as the only active mud volcano in India, offering a fascinating glimpse into the earth's geothermal activity.
These volcanoes are formed by the emission of pressurized natural gases (mostly methane) that push underground mud to the surface. The result is a cold, bubbling pool that slowly creates a miniature "cone" or crater over time.
The Mud Volcano is best visited in combination with the Limestone Caves. Here is how the logistics work to ensure you don't miss the convoy back:
Take the speedboat through the mangroves first. This is usually done in the morning session.
Return to the jetty and hire a local Jeep. It's a 10-minute bumpy, fun ride through the jungle.
A short 10-minute uphill walk on a paved forest path leads you directly to the bubbling crater.
While the Mud Volcano is smaller than some people expect, its geological significance is massive. It is one of the few places on Earth where you can see the planet "breathing" methane gas through the soil.
We arrange complete day-trips from Port Blair including Convoy Permits, AC Cabs, and Boat Tickets for Limestone Caves & Mud Volcano.
